Muñatones Castle |

Muñatones Castle
The present tower was built in the first half of the thirteenth century by Don Lope García de Salazar, on the site of another simpler 11th century tower, built by his ancestor. It is the only castle still standing in Bizkaia with its original characteristics. It has two precincts and a tower. The first precinct is four-sided, with dados at each angle and a square turret extending from the middle of the southern facade. Access to this first precinct was by means of a gate with a drawbridge over the surrounding moat. The second, simpler, precinct - or wall - had merlons and embrasures. To get to the central tower there is a door through a pointed arch over which there are the families’ three crests- Muñatones, Salazar and Butrón. The central -or Tribite - tower is topped by merlons, added during restoration work in 1949 and 1950. It is missing the patín or staircase leading up to the first floor where there is another pointed door. There are embrasures on the walls of the tower and some single or double mullioned windows. The Castle, Palace and Chapel of St. Martin of Muñatones was declared a historical/artistic monument in 1944.

El Pobal tower-house |

El Pobal tower - house
On a left-hand turn off from the road leading to Sopuerta. On the main faced facing the river, there is a round-arched door, over which there is a window surmounted by the coat of arms of the Quadra family. A staircase next to the door leads to the upper floor. The staircase continues across some old arches. The tower would have been built to defend the nearby forge of the same name.
Montaño tower - house
Near the La Arena Beach, on the slopes of Mount Montaño, overlooking the low-lying area. The tower is square and the top section has been removed. There is a two-pitch roof. On the face overlooking the estuary, there is a window and a pointed door. On the wall facing the hill, there are three crenels, several modern windows and a door. On the wall facing Somorrostro, at the height of the staircase, there is a large pointed door, several crenels and an attached pilaster.

Santelices tower - house
To the right of the Sopuerta road, in the Santelices district. The construction, largely of ashlar stone, appears to indicate that the original building was a tower, which would subsequently have been reduced in height. Of the original building, only some features of the facade remain: a lowered arched door with the coat of arms of the Salazars, over which there us a window with a sill, decorated with orbs. In the centre of this facade, there are a number of embrasures and a staircase. There is also a Gothic window, a crenel, etc. Part of the original defensive wall remains.

Memerea tower - house
The town house stands on the left-hand side of the road, between the Memerea house and the Santelices tower-house. The main facade, in ashlar-work, is the most characteristic feature remaining. It has an embrasure, as well as lintels decorated with points and three doors, one of which is round-arched with large voussoirs. To its right is another with a lintel, and the other, on the upper floor accessed by means of a staircase.
