History
The Mendiz Mendi Club was founded in Santurtzi in 1991 under the aegis of the Santurtzi cycle shop, run by its current chairman Norberto Bilbao, to encourage mountain biking.
The club's initial activities include competitions and weekend outings.
It began running a number of trials:
In 1992/93/94 it organised three descents, and in 1997 it hosted the Basque championships.
After the shop closed down in 1994, Muskiz Town Council decided to provide the club with premises of its own, given that nearly all the trials were held in the municipality. This made it easier for the club to pursue its aim of promoting the sport in Muskiz.
With backing from the federation, and in view of the excellent conditions in the area of Muskiz, where there is a wide variety of different tracks, the club began to organise more important trials, including the :
Muskiz Town Council Prize and the Basque-Navarra Cup.
The club organises nine 3-circuit popular tours, with over a hundred cyclists attending.
This year the trial included three circuits of different levels of difficulty:
• The Small Blue, for children, about 12 km long.
• The Medium Green, less than 18 km long.
• The Big One, over 28 km long, for people interested in testing their stamina.
This club has also taken part very successfully in numerous other trials, including:
- The Basque Navarrese Cup
- Championships of Bizkaia
- Championships of the Basque Country
- The Vizcaya Challenge
- The Medinesa Alpine Marathon
